The town of Hamelin was overrun by rats. The people tried many remedies without results. Finally, a mysterious stranger appeared and offered to get rid of the rats. The mayor offers him a fee, and the stranger plays a magical tune on his pipe that causes all the rats to follow him out of town. When the stranger returns for his fee, the mayor refuses to pay him, since all he did was play a tune.<br>The stranger plays a new tune, one which causes all the children of the town to follow him out of the town. Neither the piper nor the children is ever seen again.</i></font>'
